Head of Medical Informatics

Syntegra.io is a development-stage company, backed by top tier investors, on a mission to accelerate healthcare innovation by radically simplifying data sharing. Utilizing the latest in deep learning, Syntegra is building a novel solution to create synthetic data that guarantees privacy while accurately capturing the granular statistical properties of the original data. Our team is building a system that enables responsible healthcare data sharing based on our ethical mandate: trust, privacy, and transparency.

Reporting directly to the CEO, Syntegra’s Head of Medical Informatics is a critical early hire for our company.  We believe that a rigorous, evidence-based program of validation must be carried out for Syntegra’s novel approach to be widely accepted by academics, industry and regulatory bodies.  Therefore, the Head of Medical Informatics will play a pivotal role in our ultimate scale up through research. This role will partner with data science and informatics thought leaders in academics and industry to design and execute studies that validate the privacy preservation and analytic fidelity of Syntegra’s technology. This will also include determining the edge conditions where Syntegra’s approach fails.  Additionally, the Head of Medical Informatics will interact with leaders of governmental regulatory bodies to act as a strong voice for the legitimization of synthetic data in a variety of settings (synthetic controls v. RCT, post-market surveillance, etc).

  • Overall responsibility for research designed to validate the privacy and statistical fidelity of Syntegra’s technology for generating synthetic data.

  • Develop new, and manage existing academic collaborations towards validation and implementation of Syntegra technology - especially around COVID for now.

  • Author manuscripts, and work with collaborating principal investigators (PIs), to present and publish evidence of synthetic data utility in high impact publications.

  • Work with public sector and standards organizations (FDA, ONC, NIH, NSF, N3C, HHS, etc)  to integrate synthetic data into the regulatory landscape, with the aim of having Syntegra become a standard for RWE.

  • Work with product and engineering team to integrate lessons learned from research collaboration into Syntegra’s product roadmap.

  • Demonstrated excellence at leveraging senior relationships for collaboration with medical leaders at academic medical centers and other healthcare research organizations.

  • Deep understanding of healthcare information technology use in medicine, including clinical trials, clinical decision support, and patient safety.

  • Fluency in biostatistics and epidemiology along with a strong technical experience in EMR systems and medical data formats (e.g. OMOP, FHIR, and others as well as an understanding of medical ontologies such as SNOMED).

  • (Co-) authored multiple publications in leading academic journals.

  • 7 years minimum experience in clinical informatics and medical research.

  • Mindset that can break down silos. Focus on delivery through collaboration, ability to bring people together to work towards the same purpose across organization boundaries.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Medical degree or doctorate degree in a health-related field.

  • Experience, professional contacts and network in healthcare data systems.

  • Leadership role/efforts around innovation in clinical trial data and methods.

  • Participated in the development of data governance processes and procedures (with organizations such as FDA, CMS, ONC, AHRQ, and etc.).

  • Entrepreneurial experience building an early stage venture-backed company.

  • Experience working with machine learning and natural language processing (NLP).
